Over the past few years, the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by insurgents in both Iraq and Afghanistan has brought about a whole new lexicon into common usage by the British public. Almost daily media reports from around the world provide news on their use and the casualties that they cause. The result of many IEDs that detonate is that innocent civilians are often killed and maimed, either deliberately or accidentally. In addition, in Afghanistan they are often used to target security forces from both the government, as well as the deployed NATO coalition; a significant proportion of all coalition casualties in Afghanistan are caused by IEDs.
