War stirs many emotions. When war is total and existential to society, it is assumed that the society under threat will unite for its own survival. Yet history shows that this is rarely completely the case. Even so, when the USSR-its population cowed by extreme dictatorial masters-was attacked by Germany in World War II, its population rallied to the defense of the Motherland on a scale of sacrifice and heroism belying the popular suffering of the Soviet peoples under Stalinism.
