摘要

The traditional Indian woman is invari ably portrayed as modest and compliant, entirely focused on her role as daugh ter, wife and mother. Yet, by the same token, the image of the warrior woman is a recurring fgure in Indian history, beginning in Hindu religious mythology with the goddess Durga and culminating in modern times with fgures such as Phoolan Devi, the notorious bandit queen.
