摘要

Growing up in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, I spent most of my youth outside exploring their diverse forests. I entered college with a love of calculus (thank you James Carroll!) and a curiosity for the mechanisms underlying patterns observed in nature. I was a math major at Washington and Lee University until spring arrived in Virginia. I switched to Biology and spent my remaining springs immersed in field Botany, Herpetology, Ornithology, and a study‐abroad Biodiversity course in Ecuador. My sophomore year, I obtained a research scholarship and said goodbye to customer service in sandwich prep, selling movies, and as a restaurant hostess. Mentored by Larry Hurd, I discovered praying mantids gain fitness benefits from eating pollen.
