Beta-hemolyticStreptococcusagalactiaeserotypeVwasidentifiedasthecauseofaninfectioninlaboratorymice.Principally,theorganisminducedfatalsepticemiainDBA/2breeding-agemice.Thesyndromeappearedtooriginateasanascendingpyelonephritis,whichprogressedtosepticemia.Microscopiclesionswerefoundintheheart,kidneys,spleen,andliver,andlesscommonlyintheuterus,thoraciccavity,lymphnodes,andlungs.Theepizooticwascontrolledbyeradicationofthebreedingcolonies,disinfectionofthebarrier,andautoclavingofallequipment.Thenewreplacementcolonieshaveremainedfreeoftheorganism.
