Metabolicsyndromeisaconditionthattypicallyincludescentralobesity,insulinresistance,glucoseintolerance,dyslipidemia,andhypertension.Disruptionofthehypothalamic#8211;pituitary#8211;adrenalaxis,aregulatorofcorticosteronesecretion,occursinsomecasesofmetabolicsyndromeandobesity,andCushinghypercortisolemiaisassociatedwithobesityandmetabolicdisorders.WethereforeassessedanatomicandclinicalpathologyinC57BL/6NCrlmicetoevaluatetheeffectsofchroniccorticosteroneinthedrinkingwateratdosesof25,50,and100#956;g/mLfor25d.Treatedmicedevelopedobesity,glucoseintolerance,electrolyteaberrations,anddyslipidemiathatweredose-dependentandmostsevereinthe100-mu;g/mLtreatmentgroup.Toevaluatereturntonormalfunction,additionalC57BL/6NCrlmicereceivedcorticosterone-freewaterfor2wkafterthe25-dtreatmentperiod.Accordingtoresultsofgrossexamination,miceappearedtorecoverwithindaysofexogenouscorticosteronewithdrawal;however,adrenalglandvacuolationandprotein,lipid,andelectrolyteabnormalitiespersisted.Together,thesefindingssupportchroniccorticosteroneexposurethroughthedrinkingwaterasapotentiallyuseful,noninvasivemethodtoinducesomefeaturesofmetabolicsyndrome.
