Developmentofbreedingcoloniesofrhesusmacaques(Macacamulatta)thatarespecificpathogen-free(SPF)forrhesuscytomegalovirus(RhCMV)isrelativelystraightforwardandrequiresfewmodificationsfromcurrentSPFprograms.InfantsseparatedfromthedamatorwithinafewdaysofbirthandcohousedwithsimilarlytreatedanimalsremainRhCMVseronegativeindefinitely,providedtheyareneverdirectlyorindirectlyexposedtoaRhCMV-infectedmonkey.Bysystematicallycohousingseronegativeanimalsintolargersocialcohorts,breedingpopulationsofanimalsSPFforRhCMVcanbeestablished.TheadditionalcostsinvolvedinexpandingthecurrentdefinitionofSPFstatustoincludeRhCMVareincrementalcomparedwiththemoneyalreadybeingspentonexistingSPFefforts.Moreover,thelargeincreaseinresearchopportunitiesavailableforRhCMV-freeanimalsarguablywouldfarexceedthedevelopmentcosts.PotentialnewareasofresearchandfurtherexpansionofexistingresearcheffortsinvolvingthesenewlydefinedSPFanimalswouldhavedirectimplicationsforimprovementsinhumanhealth.
