TheinbredFVBmousestrainisusedextensivelyincancerresearch.TransgenicmicewithanFVB/Nbackgroundinwhichtheexpressionofgreenfluorescentproteinisunderthecontrolofvariouspromotershavebeenusedwidelyforthelastdecade.However,littleisknownabouttheincidenceandcharacteristicsofspontaneoustumorsinthesemice.Inaddition,onlyafewtumorlineshavebeenestablishedforuseinthisparticularmousestrain.OuraimwastoinitiateadatabaseofspontaneoustumorsinourretiredFVB/Nbreeders,analyzethehistopathologiccharacteristicsofthesetumors,andestablishnoveltumorlinesinvivoandinvitro.Atotalof234(40male,194female)breedermicewereobservedduringtheirnaturallifespans.Theincidenceofspontaneoustumorswas45.0%inmalemiceand52.8%infemalemice.Alltumorsinmalemicewerelungalveolar#8211;bronchiolar(AB)neoplasms,exceptfor1testisinterstitialcelltumor.Infemalemice,histopathologicexaminationrevealed48lungABtumors,27mammaryglandtumors,13ovariantumors,and14othertumors.SeveralofthesespontaneoustumorshavebeentransplantedintoFVB/Nmice.Onemammaryadenocarcinoma(MCaP0008)and1lungABcarcinoma(LAP0297)weresuccessfullytransplantedsubcutaneouslyandpassagedseriallyinvivo.Subsequently,weestablishedcelllinesfrombothtumors,whichweremaintainedinmonolayerinvitro.BothofthegraftedtumorsandcelllinesaretumorigenicinVEGFsupP/sup-GFP/FVBandTie2supP/sup-GFP/FVBmice.Establishmentofthesenoveltumorlineswillbenefitbothinvivoandinvitrostudiesonthepathophysiologyofcancerinthisrelativelynewbutwidelyusedmousestrain.
