Renalhypoplasiaduetoacongenitallyreducednumberofnephronsprogressestochronickidneydiseaseandmaycauserenalanemia,giventhatthekidneysareamajorsourceoferythropoietininadults.Hypoplastickidney(HPK)ratshaveonlyabout20%ofthenormalnumberofnephronsanddevelopCKD.ThisstudyassessedtherenalfunctionandhematologicchangesinHPKratsfrom70to210dofage.HPKratsdemonstrateddeteriorationofrenalexcretoryfunction,slightlymacrocyticerythropeniaatalldaysexamined,age-relatedincreasesinsplenichemosiderosisaccompaniedbyatendencytowardincreasedhemolysis,normalplasmaerythropoietinlevelsassociatedwithincreasedhepaticanddecreasedrenalerythropoietinproduction,andmaintenanceoftheresponseforerythropoietinproductiontohypoxicconditions,withincreasedinterstitialfibrosisat140dofage.TheseresultsindicatethatincreasesinsplenichemosiderosisandthemembranefragilityofRBCmightbeassociatedwitherythropeniaandthathepaticproductionoferythropoietinmightcontributetomaintainingthebloodHgbconcentrationinHPKrats.
