Inanimalresearch,validityandreproducibilityofdataarecriticallyinfluencedbythemicrobialstatusoftheexperimentalanimals.Oneofthemostcrucialaspectsofassuringqualityinanimalresearchisprovidingresearchpersonnelwithconfidencethatexperimentalresultswillnotbeinvalidatedduetointerferencecausedbyinfectiousdisease.Aneffectivequarantineprogramisessentialtoprovidingthisassurance.Quarantineprogramsaregenerallyinstitutedtopreventtheintroductionofrodentpathogensintoestablishedspecific-pathogen-freecoloniesinafacility.Therefore,programsshouldbedesignedtoisolatenewlyacquiredrodentsuntiltheirhealthstatuscanbedeterminedandtomaximizetheprobabilitythatmicroorganismsofinterestwillbedetectedbeforetheanimalsareintroducedinto(andthus,couldpotentiallycontaminate)establishedcolonies.Importantprinciplesthatarecriticaltodesigninganeffectivequarantineprogramwillbediscussedhere,aswillthepracticalimplementationoftheseprinciples.Althoughquarantineprogramsmaybecostlyintermsoftimeandeffort,thesecostsmustbebalancedagainstthepotentialcostsofdiseaseoutbreaksthatcouldinvalidatelong-termstudies,alternormalbiologicalbaselines,andcausethelossornecessitatere-derivationofrareorvaluablestrainsofrodents.Reducingtheincidenceofquarantinefailuresthroughappropriateprogramdesignandimplementationhelpstomaintaintheconfidenceofresearchpersonnelinthevalueofquarantineprogramsandinourcompetenceasspecialistsinlaboratoryanimalmanagementandaspartnersintheresearchprocess.
