Weperformedacross-sectionalstudytoestimatetheprevalenceof2gamma-2-herpesviruses,rhesusrhadinovirus(RRV)andretroperitonealfibromatosisherpesvirus(RFHV),inbreedingcoloniesofrhesusmacaques.Of90animalsselectedforsampling,73(81%)werepositiveforRRV,whichwasdetectedonlyinbloodin22(24%),onlyinsalivain15(16%),andinbothbloodandsalivain36(40%).DetectionofRRVDNAinbloodandsalivawassignificantlyhigherinanimalsyoungerthan2y.Incomparison,RFHVwasdetectedin40(44%)ofthe90animals:onlyinbloodin5(6%),onlyinsalivain26(29%),andinbothbloodandsalivain9(10%).Dualinfectionwasdetectedin38(42%)animals;RFHVwasonlydetectedincoinfections.ThemeanRRVgenomecopynumberinbloodwassignificantlyhigherthanthatforRFHV.AgewasasignificantpredictorofRRVcopynumberinbloodandRFHVcopynumberinsaliva.Ofthe90animals,88(98%)werepositiveforrhadinoviralantibodiesonanimmunofluorescentassay.BothRRVandRFHVarehighlyendemicinsociallyhousedbreedingcoloniesofrhesusmacaques,andtheirpatternsofinfectionaresimilartothatforthebetaherpesvirusrhesuscytomegalovirus.
