FewstudiesofbodycompositionhavebeendoneinNewWorldprimates.Inthestudyreportedhere,fourmethodsofassessingbodycomposition(bodyweight,anthropometry,labeled-waterdilution,andtotalbodyelectroconductivity)werecomparedin20marmosets,aged0.96to7.97years.Malesandfemalesdidnotdifferinanymeasure(P0.05).Bodyweightrangedfrom272to466g,andbodyfatestimatesvariedfrom1.6to19.5%.Strongpositivecorrelationswereobservedbetweentotalbodywaterandtotalbodyelectroconductivity(Rsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.77),bodyweightandfat-freemass(malesRsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.95;femalesRsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.91),andbodyweightandfatmass(malesRsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.86;femalesRsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.85;P0.01).Maleandfemaleslopeswereequivalent(P0.05)fortheregressionsoffatandfat-freemassagainstbodyweight.Positivecorrelationsalsowereobservedbetweengirthmeasuresandfat-freemass(Rsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.48to0.78)andfatmass(Rsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.60to0.74;P0.01).Agoodsecond-orderpolynomialrelationshipwasobservedbetweenageandfat-freemassforthecombinedsample(Rsupxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"2/sup=0.64).Resultsindicatedthat:subjectswerelean;therewasnosexualdimorphismrelativetomeasures;bodyweightprovidedareliableestimateoffatandfat-freemass;andwithin-subjectbodyweightchangesreflectedasimilarrelationshipbetweenbodyweightandfat-freemassasdidthatacrosssubjects.
