Whilecommonmarmosetsareincreasinglyusedasalternativeprimatemodelsinbiomedicalresearch,theirlifehistory,specializedbehavioranduniquephysiologyarenotwellknown.Thispaperdescribesimportantmarmosetattributesthatareparticularlyrelevantforbiomedicalresearch,includingreproduction,neurobiology,immunology,endocrinesignaling,obesityandaging,inadditiontofetalandpostnataldevelopment.Whilecommonmarmosetsexhibitcharacteristicanthropoidprimatetraits,theyclearlydifferfromOldWorldprimatesandhumansinavarietyoffunctions,includingreproduction,endocrinesignalingandimmunology.Thesedifferences,however,permittheuseofcommonmarmosetsinunconventionalresearchstrategiestargetedonhumanpathology.
