Inthestudyreportedhere,referenceintervalsforhematologicandserumclinicalchemistryvariablesinthechimpanzee(Pantroglodytes)weredevelopedandcharacterized.Datawerecollectedlongitudinallyacrossa10-yearperiodfor86subjectsatthePrimateFoundationofArizona(PFA).Variablesincludedninestandardhematologicand25standardserumclinicalchemistryvalues.Ananalysisofvariance(ANOVA)wasusedtotestformaineffectsbyageandsex.Inaddition,PFAmeanandrangevalueswerecomparedwiththosepublishedforhumansandsixotherchimpanzeecolonies.TheANOVAresultssuggestanageeffectonhematologic(meancorpuscularhemoglobin,meancorpuscularvolume,neutrophils)andserumclinicalchemical(creatinine,totalprotein,globulin,tryglycerides,directbilirubin,iron,(#59138;-glutamyltransferase,alaninetransaminase,creatinekinase)values.Inaddition,sexhadamaineffectonseveralvariables(redbloodcells,hemoglobinconcentration,hematocrit,uricacidandsodiumconcentrations,andaspartatetransminaseandcreatinekinaseactivities);valuesformalesweregreaterthanthoseforfemales.Further,humanandchimpanzeemeanandrangevaluesoftenwereindistinguishablefromoneanother.However,changesinhumanandchimpanzeevaluesassociatedwithagedifferandsuggestthathematologicandserumclinicalchemistryvaluesmaybedifferentiallyaffectedbyphysicalandsexualmaturationinhumansandchimpanzees.
