Recentadvancesinthetechnologyassociatedwithdigitalradiographyhavecreatednewopportunitiesforbiomedicalresearchapplications.Hereweevaluatedtheuseofthoracicradiographyasanoninvasiverefinementmethodologyforthecynomologusmacaque(Macacafascicularis)modelofH1N1infection.Thoracicradiographicevaluationsofmacaquesinfectedwithanyof3strainsofemergingH1N1swine-associatedinfluenzavirusisolatedduringtherecentpandemicwerecomparedwiththoseofmacaquesinfectedwiththecurrentlycirculatingKawasakistrainofH1N1influenza.Ventrodorsal,right,andleftlateralthoracicradiographswereobtainedatdays0,1,6,8,11,and14afterinfection.Aboard-certifiedveterinaryradiologistwhowasblindedtothestudydesignevaluatedtheimages.Numericscoresofextentandseverityoflunginvolvementassignedtoeachradiographwerecomparedanddemonstratedasignificantandsubstantialdifferenceamonggroups.Theradiographicevaluationallowedfornoninvasiveassessmentoflunginvolvement,diseaseonset,progression,andresolutionofradiographicchangesassociatedwithH1N1influenzainfection.
