Captive-raisedreddrumfishwereobservedwithphenotypicabnormalities,includingdeformitiesofthespine,jaw,andcephalicregion,thatwereconsistentwithvitaminCdeficiencyduringthelarvalstage.Inlightoftheirvisibleexteriorskeletalabnormalities,wesuspectedthattheaffectedfishwouldalsohaveabnormalotoliths.Otolithsaredensecalcareousstructuresthatfunctioninfishhearing.Wehypothesizedthatabnormalfishwouldhaveirregularotolithsthatwouldalterbehaviorandcortisollevelsascomparedwiththoseofphenotypicallynormalfish.Thenormalandabnormalfishhadstatisticallysignificantdifferencesinbehavior,cortisollevels,andotolithvolumeanddensity.MicroCTassessmentofabnormalfishrevealedoperculumabnormalities,malocclusions,andseveraltypesofotolithmalformations.Therefore,theaffectedfishhadnotonlyanabnormalskeletalappearancebutalsosignificantlyabnormalbehaviorandcortisolresponses.
