Duringexploratorylaparotomy,a10-year-oldfemalerhesusmacaquewasfoundtohavea6.0×9.5×2.0-cmmultichambered,yellow,cysticmasscranialtotheuterus,fromwhichlargeamountsofopaque,whitefluidweredischargedintotheabdominalcavity.Theanimalwaseuthanized,andthebodywassubmittedforgrossandhistologicevaluation.Sectionsofthemassexaminedmicroscopicallyconsistedofsheetsofpolygonaltoroundcells,withwelldefinedcellbordersandmoderateamountsofeosinophiliccytoplasm.Scatteredthroughoutthesecellswerefew,variablysizedglandularstructurescomposedofcolumnartocuboidalepithelium.Glandularepithelialcellswerepositiveforkeratin,andthesheetsofpolygonalcellswerepositiveforvimentinandnegativeforkeratinandCD68.Grossandhistologicappearance,immunohistochemicalfindings,andhistoryofmedroxyprogesteroneacetateinjectionswerecompatiblewithadiagnosisofstromaldecidualizationofendometriosis.Subsequentbiopsiesofsimilarlesionsinotherrhesusmacaquesinthecolonybeingtreatedwithmedroxyprogesteroneacetateforendometriosisrevealedcomparablehistologicfindings.
