Severetype-3vonWillebrand'sdisease(vWD)wasdiagnosedinayoungmalerhesusmonkeythathadexcessivebleedingfromminorwounds.PlasmasamplesfromthemonkeyhadnodetectablequantitativeorfunctionalvonWillebrandfactor(vWF),lowFactor-VIIIcoagulantactivity,andmoderateprolongationofactivatedpartialthromboplastintime.Testingoftheaffectedmonkey'sextendedfamilyrevealedalikelyhereditarybasisforthevWD,inthatthesireandapaternalhalf-sisterhadmarkedlyreducedplasmavWFconcentration.Freshwholebloodwastransfusedtocontrolfrequentbleedingepisodesthroughoutthemonkey'slife.AlthoughvWDisthemostcommoninheritedbleedingdisorderinhumansanddogs,thisisthefirstreportofvWDinanonhumanprimate.
