OldWorldprimatesareoftenstudiedtomodelhumanskeletalphysiology.Animportantadvantageofmonkeysoverotheranimalmodels(i.e.,rodents)isthepresenceofcorticalboneHaversianremodeling.Seventy-fivefemalerhesusmonkeys(Macacamulatta)weresubjectedtobonebiopsy.Withmonkeysinlateraldecubitusposition,thetenthribwassurgicallyexposedandfreedfromperiosteumbyuseofcarefulsharpandbluntdissection.Theribsectionwasresected,usingbonecutters,andthesurgicalwoundwasclosed.Thisprocedurewasrepeatedforthecontralateralribatalatertimepointin65monkeys.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brTherewasnomortalityorappreciablemorbidity.Thebonespecimenswere(mean±SD)2.50±0.25cmlong,with5.51.0mm2totalcross-sectionalarea.Theywereadequateforhistologic,immunohistochemical,andquantitativehistomorphometricexaminations.Prevalenceofpneumothoraxwasapproximately8.0%forthe140procedures.Thiscomplicationwasimmediatelyandsuccessfullycorrectedbyinsertionofasmallthoracictube,evacuationofpneumothorax,andclosureoftheincision.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brThiswell-tolerated,repeatableprocedureyieldsexcellentspecimensforperformanceofcorticalbonehistologicexaminationwithouteuthanasia,allowinglongitudinalevaluation.
