An experiment with the volcanic zeolite tuff of Mirsid(Romania) on a slightly haplic luvisol of an orchard was performed, inorder to improve its physical properties as well as to investigate if anyinfluence on the nutrition of the plants (Jonathan apple trees) could beobserved. The grinded zeolite tuff (granulation of 1-3 mm) was appliedbefore planting, being incorporated at a depth of 20-25 cm under furrowin the following dosages: 0-30-45-60 t/ha. During the four years of experimentthe water-stable structural aggregates in the upper 20 cm layerincreased by 24%. The zeolite volcanic tuff had a favourable effect on theN maintenance and brought about the increase of mobile K content inthe soil by 2-3 times. It had also a favourable effect on the main nutrients(N,P,K,Ca) in leaves and fruits, inducing a light increase of Fe in leavesand a higher one in the fruit (34%). A moderate increase of sugars, acidsand vitamin C in fruits was also noticed. The fruits showed a betterstorage capacity during the winter period.
