Parafollicular (PF) cells in the thyroid gland areknown to produce mainly calcitonin, involved inthe homeostasis of calcium, but also a number ofother regulatory peptides affecting the TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone)-regulated thyrocyteactivity (reviewed in Sawicki, 1995). Although PFcells are distinct from follicular cells in theirembryologic origin and physiology, recent expe-rimental studies indicate that PF cells are subjectedto the regulatory control of pituitary TSH andindicate a probable interaction between PF andfollicular cells in a paracrine manner (Morillo-Ber-nal et al., 2009).
