Wepresentanon-iterativemethodtodeconvolvethepointspreadfunction(PSF)fromimagestakenwiththeSuzakuX-rayImagingSpectrometer(XIS).Themethodisoptimizedforanalysesofextendedsourceswithhighphotonstatistics.SuzakuhasfourXISdetectors,eachwithitsownX-rayCCDandX-RayTelescope(XRT),andhasbeenprovidingopportunitiesinspatially-resolvedanalysesofextendedobjects.Thedetectors,however,sufferfrombroadandposition-dependentPSFswiththeirtypicalhalf-powerdiameter(HPD)of$$sim$$110$$^{primeprime}$$.Thepresentmethodisintendedtorecoverspatialresolutionto$$sim$$15$$^{primeprime}$$overadynamicrangeofaround1:100inthebrightnesswithoutassuminganysourcemodel.Ourdeconvolutionproceedsintwosteps:AnXISimageismultipliedbytheinverseresponsematrix,calculatedfromitsPSFafterrebinningCCDpixelstolarger-sizetiles(typically6$$^{primeprime}$$$$ imes$$6$$^{primeprime}$$).Theinvertedimageisthenadaptivelysmoothed.ThePSFismodeledonaray-tracingprogramandanobservedpoint-sourceimage.ThemethodhasbeenappliedtoimagesofCentaurusA,PSRB1509$$-$$58andRCW89takenbyoneXIS(XIS1).TheresultshavebeencomparedwithimagestakenwithChandratoconcludethatthespatialresolutionhasbeenrecoveredto$$sim$$20$$^{primeprime}$$downtoregionswherethesurfacebrightnessisabout1:50ofthebrightesttile.WebelievethespatialresolutionandthedynamicrangecanbeimprovedwithhigherfidelityPSFmodelingandhigherprecisionpointinginformation.
