TheasteroidexplorerHAYABUSAreenteredintotheEarth'satmosphereon2010June13.WemadesimultaneousTV(television)observationsatsevengroundsitesinordertocalculatethetrajectoriesofHAYABUSAanditssamplereturncapsule(SRC),whichbothreenteredintotheatmosphere.OurTVobservationsshowedthat,afterHAYABUSAreenteredtheatmosphere,thebeginningtimeofitslightemissiononvideowas13:51:57.4UTataheightof101.0$$pm$$0.2km.Theendtimewas13:52:42.0UTataheightof38.6$$pm$$0.2km.Theinitialvelocityatthebeginningwas12.1$$pm$$0.3kms$$^{-1}$$,andtheentryanglewas9$$^{circ}$$.AfteridentifyingSRCasseparatedlightemissionindependentofthemotherspacecraft,weanalyzedthetrajectoryofSRCfromaheightof52.9kmto35.7kmbasedonvideoimages.Theactualtrajectoryofthecapsule,determinedfromtheTVobservations,wasalmostthesameasthepredictedtrajectoryintermsoftheposition,velocity,andtime.WethencalculatedthefallspotsoftheSRCheatshieldsfromthemultisiteTVobservations.
