Survey on Pesticides Used by Farmers in Belagavi Taluka and Analysis of Pesticide Residues in Commonly Used Vegetables.

Background: Fruits and vegetables are importantcomponents of the human diet since they provideessential nutrients that are required for most of thereactions occurring in the body. However, indiscriminateand overuse of pesticides damage agriculture andenvironment, but the pesticide residues on foodproducts affect the health. Aim and Objective: Thepresent study aimed to assess the Knowledge, Attitudeand Practices (KAP) among the farmers of Belagavitaluka, regarding the pesticide use and to determinepesticide residues in commonly used vegetables.Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectionalstudy included a total of 200 farmers selected randomlyfrom 4 divisions of Belagavi taluka. Questionnaire wasdeveloped to assess the KAP. Fresh tomatoes and chilieswere used as samples, fine homogenized sample (200 g)was extracted with ethyl acetate and analyzed using gaschromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: Most ofthem were aware of the precautions to be taken duringpesticide use. However, not all farmers followed themeasures. Maximum of them used pesticides (n=150),followed recommended method (n=130) andconcentration (n=152). Pesticide residues found in chiliand tomato samples exceeded the maximum residuelimit. Conclusion: Chlorpyrifos and ethion in tomatosample, and chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin in chilliessample were the pesticide residues. Protective measuresfollowed by the farmers was poor. Therefore, theknowledge of the farmers should be upgraded and,camps should be conducted periodically to monitorpesticide residues and health of the farmers.
