Structural reliability assessment by local approximation of limit state functions using a new cokriging technique

Recently, the kriging method which is a semi-parameter interpolation technique that can be used for deterministic optimization and structural reliability has gained popularity. However, to fully exploit the kriging method, especially in large-scale systems, a large number of sample points should be generated to fill the design space and this can be very expensive and even impractical in practical engineering analysis. Therefore, in this paper, to solve the problems above, a new method based the cokriging technique is proposed to calculate the structural reliability. This paper presents two different schemes to explore the use of the cokriging method including direct cokriging and indirect cokriging for structural reliability assessment by comparing it with the kriging method based on numerical examples. The method presented incorporates gradient information in addition to primary function values when generating approximation models, which lead to more accurate results with less sample points especially in the multi-dimensional problems, thus it improve the efficiency and has great significant for reliability assessment in the real engineering.
