The Centers for Disease Controland Prevention (CDC) convened aconference on March 12–13, 2003, inAtlanta, Georgia, to discuss improv-ing state-based surveillance of drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae(DRSP) and methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus (MRSA). TheCouncil of State and TerritorialEpidemiologists, the Association ofPublic Health Laboratories, and CDCco-sponsored the conference; 120 par-ticipants from 38 states attended. Theconference was organized by theDivisions of Healthcare QualityPromotion and Bacterial and MycoticDiseases, National Center forInfectious Diseases, CDC. Goals ofthe meeting included 1) reviewing therationale for surveillance of DRSPand MRSA, 2) presenting scientificstudies highlighting valid and mean-ingful methods of performing state-level surveillance, 3) sharing state-level surveillance experiences, and 4)identifying unmet needs of the statehealth departments in performingsuch surveillance
