To facilitate rapid, unbiased, differential diagnosis ofinfectious diseases, we designed GreeneChipPm, a panmi-crobial microarray comprising 29,455 sixty-mer oligonu-cleotide probes for vertebrate viruses, bacteria, fungi, andparasites. Methods for nucleic acid preparation, randomprimed PCR amplification, and labeling were optimized toallow the sensitivity required for application with nucleicacid extracted from clinical materials and cultured isolates.Analysis of nasopharyngeal aspirates, blood, urine, and tis-sue from persons with various infectious diseases con-firmed the presence of viruses and bacteria identified byother methods, and implicated Plasmodium falciparum inan unexplained fatal case of hemorrhagic feverlike diseaseduring the Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Angolain 2004–2005
