At the First International Conferenceof OIE Reference Laboratories andCollaborating Centres, held inFlorianopolis, Brazil, in 2006, the BrazilianMinistry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply(MAPA) proposed the candidature of the NationalAgricultural Laboratory in Campinas (LANAGROSP1)to become an OIE Reference Laboratory forAvian Influenza and Newcastle Disease.While the OIE acknowledged the technicaland scientific expertise of LANAGRO-SP staff, itrecommended that the laboratory become partof the OIE Twinning Programme, to increase itsparticipation in international activities and improveits reagent production, virus characterisation andmolecular typing processes, in addition to ensuringthe laboratory’s biosafety level.
