Weakness of the musculoskeletal system can cause movement problems that decrease the quality of life of a person. This weakness may be the result of genetic disorders, a neurological condition or injury, or simply healthy ageing. Unfortunately, many of these conditions cannot be healed with the current state of medical care available. As a result, the best option to regain mobility is the use of assistive technologies. Over the past few years, new wearable devices have been developed with the hope of assisting users in their everyday lives [1-3]. In this article, we describe the Myosuit (Figure 1)—a device inspired by the human musculoskeletal system and designed to provide its wearer with assistance across activities of daily life such as walking, sitting transfers, and stair negotiation.The Myosuit is new and unique lightweight system designed to provide its wearer with continuous assistance while performing activities of daily life. It is a textile-based garmentlike device that weighs in at under 5kg. The continuous assistance is made possible by novel algorithms and sensing technology that regulate the assistive forces and go beyond small bursts of forces—applied during specific phases of walking—and are instead be applied throughout the users’ movements. The Myosuit is, to our knowledge, the lightest wearable robot to assist users across most of the key activities of daily life.
