In late 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, a new coronavirus was identified as thecause of a cluster of pneumonia cases designated as COVID-19. The COVID-19outbreak subsequently spread exponentially to become a global pandemic.~(1) The coronavirus that causes COVID-19, referred to as severe acuterespiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), binds the host lung epithelialcellular angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2 receptors to infect the cell, andthis is most likely the mechanisms by which human-to-human transmissions ofSARS-CoV occur.~(2) Binding of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to ACE2 results in downregulationof cellular expression of ACE2.~(3)Evidence suggests that ACE2 may play an important role in the response to injury asloss of ACE2 has been associated with increased susceptibility to injury invarious organs including heart, lung, and kidney~(4) as well as promoting fasting hyperglycemia~(5) and inflammation.~(6) The mechanisms of ACE2-induced-improved protection against injury includenot only the hydrolysis of Ang II, and thus limiting its pathologicalimplications, but also the conversion of Ang II into Ang-(1-7).~(4) Evidence suggests that Ang-(1-7) may have several beneficial effectsincluding vasodilation, anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ischemic,anti-hypertrophic, and anti-proliferative effects.
