The Air Force is exploring beddown options for the B-21 Raider, announcing in the Federal Register this week it will prepare environmental impact statements for Dyess Air Force Base, TX, and Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD. The service will hold a series of public meetings beginning March 31 to consider options for the first B-21 main operating base, which will include two operational squadrons, one formal training unit and a weapons generation facility. The Air Force plans to begin fielding the B-21 in the 2020s, and officials have said the bombers will be based at installations that currently house the B-l and B-2. The service announced in 2018 it had selected Dyess, Ellsworth and Whiteman Air Force Base, MO, as preliminary options for the first MOB. The March 6 notice does not specify a timeline for making a final basing decision. It notes that the service eventually plans to select three main operating bases and will select the final two after the first location is chosen.
