It appears as if today, near the end of the century, a cycle is coming to a close which was opened by Columbus, as he set out for his journey across the Atlantic Ocean more than five hundred years ago. With his departure from Cadiz in search for a direct route to Asia, thinking of God, spices, and gold, he unknowingly set the sails for the expansion of Europe to the ends of the world. Many departures followed the departure from Cadiz; European civilization has circumnavigated the globe in the wake of Columbus.
