For the past few years many of the newer user interface technologies have taken attention away from the old standby keypads and keyboards. This, however, has not rendered the keypad and keyboard irrelevant because the best user interfaces make use of the features and benefits of both. Most advanced user interfaces are now starting to use a combination of keypads and touch-screens. These hybrids combine touchscreen LCDs and keypads to create a user experience that has an order of magnitude more flexible than either technology could provide individually. Many of the current user interface technologies have very specific advantages and disadvantages. The key to the creation of an easy-to-use product is to understand these elements and combine them to emphasize the strength of each one. The main user interface technologies in use today are touchscreens, keypads and mice. To a limited extent, voice recognition is available but has not evolved enough to become a mainstream technology.
