摘要

The origination of market-centred societies in the West took place in early Christianity; its primal cause was Catholic legislation on matrimony. This causal link between two ostensibly unrelated phenomena is asserted by Joseph Henrich, chair of the Department of Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, who came to this conclusion from a study of the impact made on social psychology by the structure of family life in different societies. Accordingly, early Christian promotion of monogamy and restriction of cousin marriage instigated a dynamic that unfolded in stages: as relations within wider families weakened, the sense of individual selfhood grew stronger; as humans relied less on relatives, they became more trusting of strangers; as individuals replaced kinship ties with membership in wider social networks, they evolved new, wider social networks, such as cities, monasteries, and universities: over the course of centuries, the conditions that enabled modern society took shape.
