Three days before the United Nations' special envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, was due to return to the country, Buddhist monks in the central town of Pakokku staged a small march, around 100-strong, on October 31st. They did no more than chant prayers. But it was an unmistakable gesture of defiance, suggesting that the military regime has not quite bludgeoned the life out of their uprising. It was in Pakkoku, a seat of religious learning with over 80 monasteries, that the army's heavy-handed treatment of a group of monks set off September's massive, clergy-led protests in the country's main cities. The regime came down hard, shooting at protesters, storming monasteries and making mass arrests.
