If television shows from "The Beverly Hillbillies" (bumpkins in cool California) to "The Simple Life" (Paris Hilton, a spoiled heiress, in rural Arkansas) are to be believed, country folk and city slickers do not mix. So when Credit Agricole, a big, mutually owned French bank with its roots in the countryside, bought Credit Ly-onnais, a bank strongest in France's cities, in late 2002, cynics were quick to predict disaster. On March loth Credit Agricole proudly announced operating profits of EUD1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2003, up 49% on a year before, thanks to robust growth across all business lines. A happy union after all?
