Psychologies of the Environment: Searching for Themes in the Literature

Psychology’s leaders have called for research and practices thatncontribute to the cultivation of more environmentally sustainablenlifestyles. Much work has been done by psychologies of the environment,nwhich include environmental psychology, ecopsychology,necological psychology, and other areas; but these diffuse and disparatendisciplines with varying approaches, methodologies, andnpublication sources may make it difficult to identify efforts andnfindings relevant to environmental issues, behavior, and sustainability.nAs such, this study sought to explore research from psychologiesnof the environment to highlight content themes within thenliterature, sources in which this research was published, and thenextent to which cases offered novel data. Using a qualitative approach,nthis study examined the content of 449 published works,nidentifying 12 themes in the literature. Results revealed the mostncommon journal sources, as well as the content areas most active inncollecting new data and publishing research.
