How is it possible that, given an ostensibly rigorous hiring process, an employee might not be able to do a job? What follows is an anecdote of a personal experience involving just that: My wife and I travel to Europe each year, sailing on the Cunard ship Queen Mary 2. To facilitate the debarkation process in Southampton, England, the night before we arrive in port we are given color coded luggage tags which we affix to our bags. The colors on these tags correspond to designated holding areas in the Southampton arrival hall where we will allegedly be able to efficiently collect our bags when the ship arrives in port the following morning. (You'll note, I said allegedly, but likely you haven't heard about the legendary "Kern luck.") You can imagine the chaos in the arrival hall when 2,400 passengers attempt to collect approximately 7,500 bags. The reason for the color coded holding areas is to reduce a passenger's search area of a luggage hall the size of a football field by a factor of ten. Well, continuing with the story, upon debarkation, low and behold Roger's luggage was nowhere to be found in the designated, color coded holding area. Thus, a tedious and stressful search of the entire luggage hall ensued, and the errant bags were finally located in an area on the other side of the cavernous arrival hall, designated by a distinctly different color code.
