The electronics industry got a rude awakening-or a series of them-in 2011. It was a year in which any hiccup in the supply chain posed the threat of profound disruption for OEM businesses ranging from automaking to light bulb manufacture. Supply chain issues that plagued the industry last year included the great earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March; the increasing rarity of rare-earth materials; and an alarming uptick in chip counterfeiting, which has brought new national-security headaches.
