Plans to rapidly scale up trusted third-party digital certificate services are in place at the ViaCode unit of Britain's Royal Mail, and a series of recent alliance announcements are moving it toward its goal of becoming Europe's first trusted third-party provider to serve 1 million customers. Royal Mail launched its ViaCode service early last year, expecting to leverage its 350-year-old reputation for trust in delivering mail. But it did not begin a major drive to promote the service until earlier this year, after Year 2000 fears had been put to rest. Since then, the service has formed three partnerships: with Britain's Chambers of Commerce to collaborate on certificates for trade in 10 European countries; with Internet applications specialist UK Smart in a program aimed at consumer privacy and security; and, last month, with Hongkong Post to develop secure Anglo-Sino electronic trade.
