1.Although two networks are now live, Tajikistan has one of the slowest 5G adoption profiles in the world for the new mobile standard. 2.The digitally-immature enterprise market is unlikely to be in a position to benefit from advanced wireless broadband services for at least another decade, posing a risk to operators' 5G investment plans. Leading Tajik mobile operator Tcell switched on its pilot 5G network in Dushanbe in August 2020, but is yet to disclose tariff plans or strategies for commercialising the new technology. At the switch-on, the company admitted that it would be another three to five years before full commercialisation would be possible and alluded to low interest from consumers owing to the high cost of upgrading handsets. The focus would, therefore, be on the enterprise market, which aligns with our view that 5G is best suited to serving industrial rather than mass-market customers.
