Situations emerge where an organisation has either more knowledge than it knows what to do with or a less than ideal approach in realising valuable knowledge residing within it. Either of these two situations normally results in knowledge leaving the organisation, resulting in spin-offs. Spin-offs are new organisations that emerge around knowledge in the parent organisation. When knowledge leaving the organisation is authorised and official, it is termed a sanctioned organisational spin-off; when it is unauthorised, it is an unsanctioned spin-off.
