The Energy Department's (DOE) fiscal year 2014 budget request reflects the first time in which the Obama administration is requesting funding and authority for EPA to develop generic disposal standards for siting long-term storage and disposal facilities for spent nuclear reactor fuel and high-level radioactive defense waste, according to a DOE official testifying before a House panel April 11. The authorization would initiate movement on a revamped plan for long-term storage and final disposal of commercial and defense nuclear waste following the administration's decision to abandon a plan to build a permanent repository at Yucca Mountain, NV. DOE is now generally embracing recommendations by the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC), which was charged by President Obama with developing a path forward on nuclear waste policy after canceling the Yucca Mountain project.
