A politically diverse group of states is launching an effort that aims to craft a first-time Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) policy on greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, after tabling two potentially competing resolutions on the issue in order to give the group more time to craft a consensus. At a Sept. 26 meeting of ECOS' air committee during the group's annual meeting here, the state environmental regulators that make up ECOS' membership asked conservative-leaning Indiana and liberal-leaning Delaware to lead an effort to reach a common GHG reduction policy. Such a resolution would be a major step forward given lengthy struggles by the politically diverse group of state environmental regulators to reach consensus on a GHG policy.
