Popular writings on the environment and natural resources to a large extent make predictions. In order to dot hat, the authors rely on cross- sectional and time-series statistics. In contrast, ecologists and economists in their professional work engage in analysis by trying to identify those underlying processes that characterize the social and natural world. To do so, they try to uncover individual and group behaviour, be they the behav- iour of cells, organisms, humans, atmospheric particulates, water bodies, or indeed of whatever it is that happens to be the object of study. Empirical testing of both the underlying hypotheses and their implications forms an essential part of the latter exercise.
