The Interior Department announced Aug. 11 it plans to make more than 300,000 acres of ocean off of the coast of North Carolina available for commercial leasing for offshore wind energy projects. The Wind Energy Areas announced by the department include the 122,405-acre Kitty Hawk Wind Energy Area, the 51,595-acre Wilmington West Wind Energy Area and the 133,590-acre Wilmington East Wind Energy Area. Permitting for offshore wind projects is expedited in Wind Energy Areas, a concept first announced by Interior in 2011. In addition, the department said the three North Carolina wind areas would protect important viewsheds, sensitive habitats and resources and would minimize space use conflicts with activities such as military operations, shipping and fishing.
