The Energy Department will begin "laying the groundwork" in fiscal year 2012 for evaluating long-term dry cask storage of high-level radioactive waste, a department official told a House hearing Feb. 8. The department will look beyond the 60-year period of dry cask storage that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has determined is safe for spent fuel from nuclear reactors, Peter Lyons, assistant energy secretary for nuclear energy, told the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
