Funding should be increased to address North Carolina's backlog of petroleum underground storage tank cleanups, legislative staff said in recommendations released Nov. 9. Since 1988, North Carolina has spent more than $543.7 million to clean up underground storage tank releases, according to the state Legislature's Program Evaluation Division. However, addressing the remaining releases will require at least $549 million more, and at the current funding levels, it will take 25 years to complete the cleanup of the commercial tank backlog in the state, the legislative staff said.
