Like YouTube and Wikipedia, ES&T is created from user-generated content. Authors freely submit research reports that make up the technical portion of the journal. ES&T wouldn't be possible without them. However, we don't imagine that the submitted content is perfect or that "wisdom of the masses" always applies, so we have the contents reviewed by scientific peers and editors. Reviewing, editing, posting, and archiving the journal cost money. This differentiates us from Wikipedia. At ES&T, we are experimenting with how to offer the highest-quality content, with the goal of being the best journal in the field.
