The regional centre of El Prat de Llobregat in Spain (an ambitious mixture of residential and commercial use, plus various other economic activities) is planned within a landscape traditionally made up by the agricultural plane of the river Llobregat. This space of 150 ha, strategically situated in an area between the cities of Prat and Barcelona, is now due to form the new dynamic Central Prat that is to be of major importance for Barcelona's entire metropolitan region. The response to this complex challenge is exemplified by the competition's winning project which aims at drawing up an initial document integrating the basic planning strategies for this area.This project by Jaume Carne and Claus en Kaan Architecten is structured around and throughout a central park of 70 ha, where phreatic water is very much in evidence. The park forms a complex ecotope, between the expansion of the existing urban tissue of the town of Prat and the new urban development sectors characterized by a high construction density.
